How to install a tile backsplash

Kitchen tile backsplash

Enhance your kitchen simply and easily with a backsplash.  In just a few days you can create the visual impact you’ve been wanting for your kitchen. Even beginners can take on this project, but we recommend practicing on a scrap piece of plywood until you get the hang of it.

How much tile do you need?

Measure the area that you want to tile in order to determine the square footage. Add 10-20% to account for breakage and trimming.

Check the walls

Make sure your wall is sound and strong enough to support your tile choice.

  • Tile Adhesive
  • Trowel
  • Grout
  • Level
  • Tile Spacers
  • Safety glasses
  • Latex gloves
  • Sponge

Steps to follow

Step 1: Remove outlet covers and shut off power.

Step 2: Protect your countertop with cardboard or plastic.

Step 3: Clean the backsplash area with warm water. Let dry.

Step 4: Use a trowel at a 45° angle to apply adhesive in small sections at a time.

Step 5: Start laying your first tile at the bottom middle of the backsplash area using a slight twisting motion. Check if tile is level. Cut one side of a tile spacer to accommodate for the countertop. Place a tile spacer on each end of the tile and push it into the adhesive.

Step 6:  Lay tiles one row at a time checking if tiles are level every so often.

Step 7: Use a tile cutter or wet saw when trimming is needed.

Step 8: Ensure that the outlet cover will hide the tile edges.

Step 9: Wipe off any excess adhesive once all the tile is laid.

Step 10: Remove the spacers once the adhesive is set.

Step 11: Mix grout according to the manufacturer’s instructions.Wear safety glasses and latex gloves. Apply grout diagonally with a rubber float. When the grout is firm wipe off excess diagonally with a damp sponge.

Step 12: Clean tiles once more and smooth grout joints with a damp sponge.

Step 13: When grout is fully dry, wipe off haze and shine tiles with a clean cloth.

Step 14: Replace outlet covers. Note that you will need longer screws to ensure outlet covers are flush with the tile.

Step 15: Step back and enjoy your beautiful new backsplash!
